On writing well: Tips and Best Practices for Academic Writing

How do we become strong writers? In this webinar, we will discuss writing as praxis, think about who we are as writers and who we are writing for, formulate writing goals, and engage in writing exercises to practice clear, strong writing. 

In the first part with Linda Juang, participants will be asked to bring something they are working on to practice a few writing and editing strategies. Learning writing strategies, practicing, and developing a community of support are important for getting writing done and doing it well. One of Linda’s favorite quotes on writing is by Shannon Hale: “I’m writing a first draft and reminding myself that I’m simply shoveling sand into a box so that later I can build castles.” Linda looks forward to building castles with you.

In the second part, Elisabetta Crocetti will delve into tips and best practices for academic writing, with a particular focus on developing an effective publishing strategy. This includes guidance on selecting the right journals for submission, crafting a compelling cover letter, and navigating the submission and revision process. Practical advice will also be provided on writing a persuasive response letter to reviewers’ comments. These topics will be explored from multiple perspectives: those of an author, a reviewer, and an editor, enriched with illustrative examples.

Linda Juang is a Professor of Inclusive Education at the University of Potsdam, Germany. She is currently Editor of Child Development Perspectives, has served as an Associate Editor for Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology and Infant and Child Development and as an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Adolescence. Her research projects have been funded by the German Research Foundation, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, U.S. National Institute of Health, and the European Social Fund. Her publications cover topics of ethnic-racialized identity, discrimination, family and school ethnic-racial socialization, and the well-being of adolescents and young adults.

Elisabetta Crocetti is a Professor of Social Psychology at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna Italy, where she is the Coordinator of the PhD Program in Psychology. She is the President of the European Association for Research in Adolescence (EARA) and Responsible of the IDENTITIES Lab. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Identity: An International Journal of Theory and Research, Associate Editor of the European Journal of Personality, and a member of the editorial board of several international journals, such as Adolescent Research Review, European Review of Social Psychology, and Journal of Youth and Adolescence. Her primary scholarly interest concerns the processes of identity formation in adolescence. She is the PI of the ERC-Consolidator project IDENTITIES “Managing Identities in Diverse Societies: A Developmental Intergroup Perspective with Adolescents” which aims to shed light on how the interactions that adolescents with and without a migrant background have in different spheres of life and socialization contexts affect their identities and their physical, psychological, and social well-being.
